Location: Chicago, IL

Today Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) joined community leaders at a press conference to announce Illinois House Bill 0072 to expand Medicaid eligibility to immigrants that have a valid social security number or work permit. This bill benefits DACA recipients and legal permanent residents who have been unable to access Medicaid due to their immigration status or period of residency.

Congressman García issued the following statement:

"I have long publicly advocated for universal health care in this country. Health is a basic human right, regardless of immigration status. I stand here today in support of Medicaid expansion for DACA recipients and Legal Permanent Residents under five years.

"HB 72 is long overdue and will help many individuals in our community realize their right to health care. Many who stand to benefit from this bill are already paying taxes and contribute significantly to our economy.

"This is not only a health equity issue, but a common-sense economic solution. I look to our state as a leader in health equity and justice to set the marker for other states and Congress to follow."
